About SASTRA University
Sastra University or the Shanmugha Arts, Science, Technology & Research Academy is a premium institution of high repute. It is a deemed university located in the Thanjavur district of the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. Started initially as the Shanmugha College of Engineering, this institution has developed into a full fledged deemed university and has been able to establish itself as an authority in scientific and technical education. Quite naturally, it was the first such institution to achieve the status of a deemed university in the entire state of Tamil Nadu. The Sastra University offers a number of under graduate and post graduate courses in engineering, science, education, management and the likes and also offers a few doctoral programmes which can be undertaken. It is affiliated to the University Grants Commission or the UGC and also the All India Council of Technical Education or the AICTE. It has also achieved a 5 star rating from the NAAC and is also a part of the convergence scheme of IGNOU.
The Sastra University comprises of individual departments or schools which cater to the various subjects. These are School of Civil Engineering, School of Biotechnology, School of Computing, School of Education, School of Humanities and Sciences, School of Management, School of Law, School of Chemical and Biotechnology, School of Education, The Centre for Nanotechnology & Advanced Biomaterials, Directorate of Distance Education and the Centre for Advanced Research in Indian System of Medicine. It has also received due approvals from the Bar Council of India for teaching law. The university has also been duly recognized by the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research or the SIRO and the School of Chemical and Biotechnology has been ranked as the 1st among private institutions across India and 2nd amongst institutions of all categories. Therefore, the Sastra University is a centre for true academic excellence and being a part of it is surely a matter of great pride. The Sastra University is also famous for the Sastra Ramanujan prize which is awarded to a budding mathematician who has done relevant work in Ramanujan’s field of interest. The age limit set for the award is 32 years and the prize money amounts to $ 10,000.
The admission procedure for an entry into the Sastra University is through a very transparent process. Admission can be secured purely on the basis of merit and the marks obtained in the HSC examinations or the AIEEE are taken into consideration. There are no admission tests for the same. The counseling process takes place between the months of June and July, after the 10+2 examinations of all boards are over, so that every student can avail of a fair chance to apply. There are banks on campus which provide education loans to students from rural backgrounds who are not capable of paying up the fees. The Sastra University believes in education for all and there is no discrimination pertaining to economic status of a student. The selection is on the basis of pure merit. The Sastra University is built across an area of almost 2 million and there are 9000 students residing on the campus.
